In recent years I have been increasingly interested in darker styles of classical music and atonal jazz. I find a lot of inspiration in these kinds of sounds and would like to get more familiar with specific composers and artists, if anyone has suggestions that they enjoy. These genres are really the core of brutal, extreme music for me and I would like to immerse myself in these styles of playing and composing.
For classical music, I really enjoy Bela Bartok's style and have a few albums I spin semi-regularly. Very dark, thick compositions with lots of "conversations" between instruments. Definitely a must for any metal musician who wants something different but still heavy and strange. I prefer mostly string quartets and symphonies, but certainly not limited to those styles. Again, looking mostly for atonal, dissonant, depressive, etc...
Jazz I haven't gotten into that much aside from playing in high school band and knowing some of the typical, popular artists. I'm not into that big band swing stuff that uses a truckload of brass players, but more trios and quartets focused on atonality, improv, odd time sigs and atypical chord progressions.
Whatcha got for me?

Not really atonal but have you checked out ARVO PART? there's immense moments that has crushing melancholy
also this is the hymn that Dead Congregation sings on "Teeth Into Red"
