So I was thinking lately what was the first band to play brutal death metal?
Was it really Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten?
Is there a earlier band?
If so what other bands pioneered the genre? Pyrexia - Sermon of Mockery Internal Bleeding - Voracious Contempt Dying Fetus - Purification through Violence
Id like to know if there were any other bands that had a hand in it.

Don't really care who was first per say, although you could probably say either Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse were the earliest, though there are a bunch of demo only bands from 89/90 that might be up there as well.
When it comes to the earliest straight up putrid DM, I gotta go with Broken Hope, Gaffed, Afterbirth, & Rottrevore.

Hard to say since, as you all know, brutal was at first just an adjective added to death metal when labels wrote album descriptions for their catalogs early in the 90s. I recall a flyer, probably for Suffo's Effigy, describing it as "a stab of brutal death metal" or something like that.
At which point did anyone cross the line between 'regular' death metal and what we now regard as'brutal death metal'... My vote goes to Effigy.

I came across the genre very late due to being young of age, only a few years ago when I first heard a song of Cerebral Incubation "Asphyxiating On Excrement". My interest moved swiftly towards the rawer side of (brutal) death metal. Soon I discovered Brodequin, et cetera. Raw or die.

I suppose that this thread is about which band has a release that can be considered as the first "brutal death metal" release ever, rather than what particular brutal death metal release the forum members have first encountered.
I think it's actually hard to answer as there are some really early and obscure DM bands that had filthy sounds and inhuman vocals, but when it comes to influence, I'd go with Suffocation's Effigy Of The Forgotten.

First one I ever bought was the 'Two from the Vault' for Pierced/Effigy. Still one of my all time favorite DM bands.

A lot of people didnt read the original post. Death metal and comprehension have no business being associated with each other.

Legion from Indiana released good demo in 1992. Embrionic Death released some brutal tapes in early 90's too...

I guess it might be Suffo? Says their Reincremated demo came out in '90 and the first Embrionic Death demo hit the next year. Nothing else is coming to mind right now so I'll lean with Suffocation.
